2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup powdered sugar for dusting
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
Divide the dough into two equal portions. Mix in any additional flavors if you wish.
Roll out each portion of dough into rectangles approximately 1/4 inch thick.
Layer the two rolled-out doughs on top of each other, and gently press down to keep them together. Slice the dough into strips about 1 inch wide.
Twist each strip gently, and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges turn golden.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack and dusting with powdered sugar.
